Release

Drakengard 3, known in Japan as "Drag-On Dragoon 3," is an action role-playing game developed by Access Games and published by Square Enix. Released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3, it serves as a prequel to the original "Drakengard" game. "Drakengard 3" maintains the series' signature dark and complex narrative while introducing new characters and refining gameplay mechanics.

Storyline

Drakengard 3

Set in a medieval fantasy world, "Drakengard 3" tells the tale of Zero, a powerful and enigmatic woman who wields a deadly sword and commands a dragon named Mikhail. Zero is one of six sisters known as the Intoners, each possessing immense magical abilities. The Intoners were initially revered as god-like beings who brought peace to the land. However, Zero becomes disillusioned with her sisters' rule and sets out on a mission to kill them all, aiming to eradicate the Intoner's influence and restore balance.

Dragon-riding segments allow players to control Mikhail in aerial battles, using his powerful breath attacks to defeat enemies and support Zero on the ground. The game also incorporates RPG elements, such as leveling up, unlocking new abilities, and managing resources to upgrade weapons and enhance Zero's combat capabilities.

Gameplay

Drakengard Gameplay

Drakengard 3 combines fast-paced hack-and-slash combat with aerial dragon-riding sequences, similar to its predecessors. Players primarily control Zero, engaging in intense ground-based battles against hordes of enemies. The combat system emphasizes fluid combos, weapon switching, and special abilities unique to Zero. Players can equip and upgrade a variety of weapons, each with distinct advantages and playstyles.

The game features RPG elements such as leveling up, acquiring new abilities, and managing a party of characters. Each character has unique skills and weaponry that can be upgraded over time. This system adds depth to the gameplay, encouraging players to experiment with different combinations of characters and equipment.

Development and Reception

Developed by Access Games with key contributions from series creator Yoko Taro, "Drakengard 3" aimed to blend the dark narrative and mature themes of the series with refined gameplay mechanics. The game features a unique visual style and a haunting musical score that complements its tone.

Critics praised "Drakengard 3" for its compelling story, rich character development, and the dynamic between Zero and Mikhail. The game's dark humor, complex moral themes, and unique approach to storytelling were highlighted as strengths. However, it received criticism for technical issues, including frame rate drops and graphical inconsistencies, which some felt detracted from the overall experience.
