Release

Drakengard (known as Drag-On Dragoon in Japan) is an action role-playing game developed by Cavia and published by Square Enix. Released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, the game combines ground-based hack-and-slash combat with aerial dragon-riding segments. It is notable for its dark and mature themes, interweaving complex narratives with intense gameplay.

Story and Setting

Drakengard

"Drakengard" is set in a medieval-inspired world torn by war between the Union and the Empire. The story revolves around a young prince named Caim, who is on a quest for vengeance against the Empire after they attack his kingdom, slaughtering his family.

The world of Drakengard is protected by four seals, which maintain order and keep malevolent forces at bay. However, these seals are being systematically destroyed by the Empire, threatening to unleash chaos upon the land. Central to the plot is the "Goddess of the Seal", Furiae, who is one of the seals and also happens to be Caim's sister. The game's narrative explores themes of madness, sacrifice, and the blurred lines between good and evil.

Plot

Drakengard Characters

The game's plot is nonlinear, featuring multiple endings based on the player's actions and decisions. The main narrative follows Caim's journey as he battles through hordes of enemies, both human and demonic, to protect his sister and stop the Empire's destructive campaign.

As the seals are destroyed, the world descends further into chaos, and Caim and his allies confront increasingly nightmarish creatures. The story delves into the personal struggles and traumas of its characters, highlighting their motivations and the sacrifices they make.

Each ending reveals different facets of the story, some leading to tragic conclusions, while others offer more ambiguous or hopeful outcomes. The final ending, in particular, takes a surreal turn, connecting to the events of the spin-off series, Nier.

Development and Reception

Developed by Cavia, "Drakengard" was directed by Takuya Iwasaki and produced by Takamasa Shiba, with the narrative crafted by Yoko Taro, who would later become renowned for his work on the "Nier" series. The game is noted for its grim atmosphere, complex characters, and morally ambiguous storyline, setting it apart from many other RPGs of its time.

Upon release, "Drakengard" received mixed reviews. Critics praised the game's ambitious storytelling, dark themes, and the integration of different gameplay styles. However, it was also criticized for repetitive combat mechanics, dated graphics, and technical issues. Despite these critiques, the game developed a cult following, appreciated for its unique narrative and mature themes.
